Marijuana is a psychoactive drug made from the dried leaves, stems, seeds and flowers of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa. The main active chemical in marijuana is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). In addition to THC, marijuana contains more than 400 other chemical compounds. Some of these compounds are psychoactive, some have an effect on how THC works in the body, and some have both effects.
Marijuana or Weed is a plant and it is rolled into a cigarette and smoked, or smoked in a pipe. It is a form of relaxation, since it changes the perception of a person. It is a type of hallucinogen because it can alter your senses and perception of reality. It can trigger off psychosis in a person. It is also used as a medication for people who have cancer. Marijuana is a type of drug that is illegal in most of the countries. However, the role of these compounds in the effects of marijuana is not well understood. Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States. The 2008 National Survey on Drug Use and Health estimates that 17.4 million Americans aged 12 or older used marijuana at least once in the month prior to being surveyed. This number represents 6.9 percent of the population in that age group.
Weed was, for a time, associated with poverty, ignorance, and crime, but that was the old weed, not the weed of today. Marijuana is now a valuable source of fiber and oil, used by thousands of people for coping with the stress of modern life, for stimulating their appetite (for some people, marijuana and food are the only things that get them to eat and stay healthy), for adding sparkle to their lives, and for just “getting away from it all.”
